Welcome to Grade 11 English
The theme for this course is The Art of Persuasion and although at first it may sound a bit intimidating- you will soon find that there can be many ways that you can use this writing form in other areas of your life. I hope that you enjoy the theme and the journey that you are about to embark on in my English class. In order to achieve success in this course you need to be dedicated. In the past the students who achieved the most success were not necessarily the brightest and smartest, but instead were the hardest working. I have taught many students who have had to repeat Grade 11 English due to procrastination or apathy. They ALL regretted making those choices and not doing their work. I hope you will make better ones and confidently move on to your Grade 12 English course knowing you tried your best. This is all I can ask of you and as your teacher, I will do whatever I can to help you achieve your goals. I will also leave you with a couple of words of advice that some of my former Grade 11 students shared with me. I hope they will inspire you to work hard and succeed in Grade 11 English and I look forward to our journey together.
"...homework was a big part of my mark, and not doing it was a huge mistake and my final mark got affected just because of that." - G
"...one of my regrets is I didn't do most of the assignments that cost a decent amount of marks and that could make me fail this course again. If I did them, I wouldn't be as nervous as I am." - A
"...but I do wish I didn't have been lazy in the middle of the semester. I could have had a good mark, then I wouldn't be finishing work so I can pass and I would be studying for the exam instead." - M

Grade 11 Writing Program
As part of your first term reading and writing component, you will be expected to produce samples of expository, descriptive, narrative and persuasive writing forms. This will build on the skills that you learned in your Grade 10 courses. The samples will include a final typed copy (or e-file) and an edited and revised rough draft.
You have all had experience with various writing styles, and as we begin the semester I think it is always helpful to review the four or five types of paragraphs that you will regularly be using throughout the course. I have added a file that you can download/view/print below. Stay tuned for writing activities that will help you practice these different forms of writing.

Descriptive Writing Practice
"All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." Author Robert Fulghum wrote a now famous credo in which he explains that all of life's important lessons were taught to him in Kindergarten. Click on the link below and read the credo, then in a one page descriptive writing piece, discuss one of your earliest school memories and how it has helped shape you into the person you are today. If it's difficult for you to remember that far back, you can focus on a significant moment in school that may have happened more recently. Remember to work on your descriptive language and try to help your audience visualize your memories and form pictures in their minds.

The Art of Persuasion
Throughout the Grade 11 English course, you will be exposed to different types of persuasive writing. Through the use of Editorials, Persuasive Speeches and Persuasive Essays, you will have opportunities to convince the reader that your ideas and opinions are valid.
Persuasive writing has many "rules" or guidelines, one of them being that it is vital that you have a strong understanding of the position opposite to your own. The following website offers pros and cons on a multitude of topics and is certainly worth examining.

Narrative Writing Practice
Narrative writing is another way of telling a story. When you think about the stories you've enjoyed reading, listening to, or hearing - what are the things you remember about them? A good narrative hooks the reader right from the start and keeps them engaged until the end. A writer knows who their intended audience is and writes for their pleasure. Click on the link below for narrative writing prompts and tips that will hopefully help you tell a memorable story too.
I also posted the video that we viewed in class so that you can continue to be inspired by the power of story.

The Power of Persuasion
Persuasive writing attempts to convince the reader that your opinion is a valid one. In order to effectively convince someone to change their perspective, consider something they hadn't before or move them to action, a writer must master the art of persuasion. The video clips below both deal with the sensitive issue of cyber bullying - although they are not full length videos, they manage to grab the viewer's attention right from the start, as well as present accurate information on the subject. Which do you think is more persuasive?
