Welcome to Grade 10 English
What is in a reflection? The theme for this course is Our Story and in each of our reflections, there exists a personal story and journey that we have embarked on. Throughout the storytelling medium you will learn about the power of stories and how the stories themselves can help teach you how to be a better listener, reader and writer. In order to succeed in the course you need to be dedicated. In the past, the students who have received the highest grades haven't necessarily been the brightest or smartest, but instead have been the hardest workers. Grade 10 is a wonderful new experience for you - and as you enjoy this exciting and sometimes challenging high school experience, never forget that in order to succeed and move forward in your learning, your school work has to come first. This means staying focused, not procrastinating and most of all always trying your best. I guarantee that if you do these three things along with handing in all of your assignments, you will have an important story to tell at the end of the school year...that you made it and you are ready to continue your journey in Grade 11.
ASSIGNMENTS AND RESOURCES
Throughout the course, I will add class assignments, resources and notes to this site to help you navigate your way through the program. You will need to check the site regularly to ensure that you have the necessary tools and tips to help you complete your coursework. They will be posted below and you can scroll through them as needed. If for whatever reason, you have difficulty downloading the files (most will be saved in Word), please let me know immediately and I will make the changes to the site.
Welcome to Ms. D's English Class
Welcome to Grade 10 English! As you know, this course runs all year and you will have an opportunity to gain TWO credits with your hard work. As a Grade 10 English student here at DMCI, you will be participating in a one week assessment in which you will write a Grade 10 Entrance Test during your regular Grade 10 class. All of the Grade 10 English students will be writing the same test regardless of which teacher they have. Contrary to popular belief, we are not trying to scare you or freak you out by having you do this, its simply a way for us to assess your English Language Arts skills. I will be giving you more information about the assessment during the first few days of class and it is my hope that you will put forward your best effort and work hard on this task. I am confident that you will enjoy the process and do well with it.

Grammar Unit
Grammar is important because it is the language that makes it possible for us to talk about language. Grammar names the types of words and word groups that make up sentences not only in English but in any language. As human beings, we can put sentences together even as children--we can all do grammar. (Source: grammarabout.com)

Although you have all had experience with various writing styles, as we begin the semester I think it is always helpful to review the top four types of paragraphs that you will be using throughout the course. I have added a file of the notes that we have reviewed in class that you can download/view/print below. It is your responsibility as a Grade 10 student to take a second (and longer look) at the notes that we cover within the classroom. Stay tuned for writing activities below that will help you practice these different forms of writing.

Expository or Explanatory Writing
What is Expository Writing?
"Exposition is a type of oral or written discourse that is used to explain, describe, give information or inform. The creator of an expository text can not assume that the reader or listener has prior knowledge or prior understanding of the topic that is being discussed. One important point to keep in mind for the author is to try to use words that clearly show what they are talking about rather then blatantly telling the reader what is being discussed. Since clarity requires strong organization, one of the most important mechanisms that can be used to improve our skills in exposition is to provide directions to improve the organization of the text." (Source: Stanford University)
Practice: In a well developed paragraph, teach me how to do something using step by step instructions. It could be how to make a favourite dish; how to be a best friend; how to repair an item; how to make the perfect shot; how to travel from one place to another; or any other piece of information that you wish to share. Assume that I have NO prior knowledge of this topic and CLEARLY explain all the steps I need to complete the task.

Narrative Writing Practice
Narrative writing is another way of telling a story. When you think about the stories you've enjoyed reading, listening to, or hearing - what are the things you remember about them? A good narrative hooks the reader right from the start and keeps them engaged until the end. A writer knows who their intended audience is and writes for their pleasure. Visit the website below for 114 writing prompts that will hopefully help you tell a memorable story too.

Persuasive Writing Practice
Persuasive writing attempts to convince the reader that your opinion is a valid one. In order to effectively convince someone to change their perspective, consider something they hadn't before or move them to action, a writer must master the art of persuasion. The video clips below deal with the sensitive issue of cyber bullying - although they are short videos, they manage to grab the viewer's attention right from the start, as well as present accurate statistics on the subject. I have also included a list of 40 possible persuasive topics, simply click on the PDF file to access these ideas.

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the world's best loved stories. With memorable characters such as Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and of course Scout, the novel is hard to forget. CLBC: D.M.C.I.'s Classic Literature Book Club
Welcome to the DMCI Classic Literature Book Club!
Throughout this term you will be exploring the world of Classic Literature by reading and responding to a novel of your choice. As an anonymous blogger, you will be taking part in an online literature circle with other Grade 10 students at D.M.C.I.
Administrators of the site will be Mrs. Jones, Mr. Barra, Ms. Harrington and myself, Ms. Dennis. It is important that you adhere to the rules of the blog, only making appropriate comments and avoiding any questionable or offensive dialogue. I have added a link to the CLBC blog below, along with the rules and instructions for getting started.
You will be graded according to the depth of your comments and your participation in your assigned literature circle roles (Discussion Leader, Vocabulary Enhancer, Historical Analyzer, Summator, Character Analyst, or Illustrator) Role descriptions will be handed out in class and you will have an opportunity to be exposed to all of them.
Have fun with this literature circle - feel free to be honest with your thoughts and opinions - there will be no judgements. It is our hope that you will develop not only an understanding, but a sincere appreciation and love of the Classics. Get reading folks...

CLBC Essay Resources
As you sit down to plan your CLBC personal essay - you will want to remember some of the lessons that we went over in class.
The first step is to create a THESIS statement. This will tell the reader what you will be discussing and will help focus your writing. Remember: Topic+ Opinion = Thesis. Ask yourself probing questions as you search for "the big ideas/concepts".
The second step is to PLAN your essay - organize your ideas using an essay map or web.
The third step is to write your BODY PARAGRAPHS - keep similar ideas together and use transition words and phrases to link the paragraphs/ideas together.
Once your body paragraphs have been completed - it is now time to work on your INTRODUCTION. Remember to HOOK (GRAB) your reader in by creating an interesting start to your paper.
Finally, you need to wrap things up for your reader. Restate your thesis statement, remind them of your key pieces of information/support and then leave them with a powerful CONCLUSION that leaves them wanting more.
The links and videos below will remind you of some of the topics we covered in class.
The most important thing is that you figure out how to ENJOY writing your essay - if you don't love writing it - your reader won't enjoy reading it.
Happy Writing!

Grade 10 Debating
As part of our introduction to the Romeo and Juliet mock trials, we will be taking a better look at the fine art of debating.
In class, students will form groups of four in which they will need to argue on one side or the other of a particular topic (this will be done in teams of 2).
Once groups are comfortable arguing their opinion within that group of 4, they will then move to a larger audience and debate a topic in front of the rest of the class.
I have included a list of some interesting debate topics below as well as a couple of entertaining videos on debating. Should you have any questions during the unit, please see me before or after class.

Grade 10 Human Rights Unit
As we begin our study of Human Rights, please take some time to reflect about our lifestyle here in Canada and what kinds of opportunities are available to most of us who live in this great country. As the unit progresses you will have opportunities to see and understand circumstances in which personal rights and freedoms have been taken away from people just like us.
Their stories need to be told and shared so that we can all learn from these experiences and move forward to a better tomorrow.

On September 7, 2012, B.C. teen, Amanda Todd posted a video on YouTube in which she used a series of flash cards to tell her experience of being blackmailed into exposing her breasts via webcam; being bullied; and also physically assaulted. The video went viral after her death by suicide on October 10, 2012 and resulted in international media attention. The Fine Brothers interviewed teens after watching Amanda's original video and the following video highlights their reactions and emotions over this tragedy. In response to the death of Todd, a motion was introduced in the Canadian House of Commons. The motion proposed a study of the scope of bullying in Canada, and for more funding and support for anti-bullying organizations. It was also intended to lay the groundwork for a national strategy to prevent bullying.
